Catastrophic injuries: When car crash causes a spinal cord injury

The vast majority of car accidents that occur in the state of Mississippi are minor in nature -- meaning most people walk away relatively unharmed. There are those, though, that cause victims to suffer catastrophic injuries, such as injuries to the spinal cord. When spinal cord injuries do occur, it can be a struggle for victims and their families to move forward, as the losses experienced can be severe.

According to the Mayo Clinic, auto accidents are believed to cause about half of all spinal cord injuries that occur in the United States every year. Such an injury can happen to anyone, but those most at risk are males, ages 16 to 30 or over 65, who engage in risky behaviors. Those who have existing joint or bone disorders are also more likely to suffer spinal cord injuries.

When this type of injury occurs, a number of things may happen. Depending on the location of the injury, one may lose full or partial motor and sensory function. One may also experience the following either immediately or in the hours, days or weeks following injury onset:

  • Struggling or inability to breathe
  • Full or partial paralysis
  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Balance issues

When a spinal cord injury is suspected, seeking medical treatment as soon as possible is advised. Failing to do so can negatively impact one's recovery. While there are no guarantees that full recovery will occur, seeking immediate care can greatly improve one's prognosis.

Catastrophic injuries, such as spinal cord injuries, can affect one's ability to live life to the fullest. They can also cause one to suffer severe financial losses. Thankfully, if another person's negligence contributed to one's injuries, it may be possible to seek compensation for all legally recoverable economic and non-economic damages. A person in Mississippi who would like to seek relief can turn to an experienced personal injury attorney for assistance doing so if it is appropriate under the circumstances.
