A Mississippi contested divorce can quickly get out of hand

The vast majority of divorcing couples want to end their marriages in an amicable way. Unfortunately, a Mississippi resident who is dealing with a contested divorce may quickly find that the whole thing can get out of hand pretty fast. Legal counsel can help one through it if that happens.

Recently, a long-practicing divorce attorney shared a story about the messiest dissolution case she ever encountered in her career. At the end of it all, her client came out of it with the court on his side, but it took time to get there. This case serves as a good example that how one acts and what one says during the divorce process matters.

According to this attorney, her client was accused of emotional abuse, having an affair and stealing his wife's personal funds. The wife requested sole custody of their children, lifetime alimony and a majority of the marital assets. It came to light that she was actually the one having an affair, was the one taking funds from her own account and had already taken most of the couple's shared property from their residence without her husband's consent. A judge ultimately awarded the husband shared custody, denied the other party's request for financial support, granted him more than his fair share of assets and even ordered the other party to pay a portion of her husband's legal fees. She, of course, appealed and this case was settled out of court at a later date.

Not all divorcing couples in Mississippi will have the opportunity to experience relatively peaceful dissolution proceedings. Contested divorce happens. When it does, being honest and seeking the assistance of legal counsel can help one come out on the other side with a settlement agreement that is fair and balanced.
