Are you facing a toxic divorce?

Non-contentious forms of divorce seem to dominate the internet. People would be wise to put aside their differences and work together in order to reach an amicable settlement. The problem is that isn't always possible.

In many cases, couples simply can't get along well enough to sit down together like this. If you are part of one of those couples, you shouldn't feel compelled to "follow the crowd." You need to do what is best for you and your family as you enter into a new phase of your life.

Your future ex's personality makes a difference

A primary consideration regarding whether you can have an amicable divorce or end up in court has to do with the personalities involved. If your future ex-spouse exhibits traits for one of the following personality types, you will probably end up in court, facing a toxic divorce:

  • Some people always consider themselves the victim. If your spouse feels this way, you can count on him or her to try to make a victim out of you.
  • Perhaps your spouse exhibits narcissistic behaviors. During the divorce, he or she will ignore your needs, focus only on his or herself, and totally dismiss you and your needs.
  • Control freaks only tend to get worse when it comes to divorce. He or she will spend the majority of the time trying to make you look incompetent and incapable of parenting if you have children.

To make matters worse, one of the above personality types could turn against you in an extreme manner. Your spouse may not just want to "win," but also destroy you by making you hurt. Dealing with a toxic divorce while shielding your children from it (if you have any) probably feels daunting and insurmountable.

Sadly, you can count on your experience coming with arguments, tension and stress. Attempting to deal with a future former spouse with one of these personality types outside of the courtroom would probably not yield worthwhile results. Instead, you will need to prepare yourself for a fight in court.

You don't have to deal with this alone

You will more than likely end up fighting for everything you deserve, which can be difficult and emotionally exhausting. Fortunately, you do not have to go through this process alone. You can enlist the aid of a legal ally who understands your predicament and will help you protect your rights and receive the start to your future that you deserve.
